EA and Maxis games have announced that the world’s number one life simulation game will be receiving an update that blurs the lines of the gender binary.

The sims has always been a very progressive series, allowing same-sex marriage and adoption, but has never before explored gender expression to such a degree. Many in the sims community have turned to player created mods to allow sims to wear clothing allocated for the opposite gender but now EA has taken it upon themselves to expand the gender binary in order to cater for their diverse audience. Not only does this mean more clothing options but hairstyles, tone of voice, accessories and even allowing players to choose if a sim can stand to pee or become pregnant.

This comes as great news for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals who can now create characters that better represent themselves.

The official Sims website stated in its latest news update “The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it’s really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more”

Players have been seeking more options for a long time. In August 2015, Mod the Sims user, RTS4CC, created a mod that allowed sims to have top surgery scars so players could create more authentic female to male trans characters.
